The Adeyfield Academy

Literacy Support

Our ethos at The Adeyfield Academy is that literacy and reading supports students in becoming successful and employable in an ever-advancing world. Literacy and reading is integral to every facet of successful learning and it is actively taught across all disciplines.

There is undoubtable evidence that connects reading for pleasure and academic attainment but reading for pleasure has many other non-academic benefits also, including increasing empathy, improving relationships with others and supporting mental health and wellbeing. Good readers also become better writers, freer thinkers and more confident learners. The knowledge developed that comes with reading transcends the classroom and lasts a lifetime.

As teachers, we are often asked by parents what can be done to support young people with reading at home. It is a fact that with the rising popularity of social media and gaming, that our children read less and less.

The Literacy Trust has published research which shows that over half (56%) of children and young people aged 8 – 18 don’t enjoy reading in their free time. This is an all-time low statistic since they began surveying children in 2005. It is their mission to establish a strong reading culture in schools, communities and homes to support children’s success in school and beyond.

At The Adeyfield Academy we firmly believe in creating an environment where children read a range of texts across all subject areas. We also believe in supporting you as parents when it comes to reading outside of school.

You will find on our website more information about this including:

  • How to help your child read at home
  • Reading across the curriculum
  • Details on Literacy Planet - Our online literacy platform
  • Reading lists for all year groups

  • Reading across the curriculum

Literacy and reading strategies are embedded into all subjects across our school. Faculties have identified what reading, writing, vocabulary and oracy looks like in their lessons as well as the skills and knowledge required for students to unlock their full potential. Literacy skills are both general and subject specific and at The Adeyfield Academy our staff ensure that students:

  • Learn key subject specific vocabulary
  • Opportunities to practice reading
  • Marking and feedback includes literacy
  • Oracy tasks are built into all lessons
